Es Pisang Ijo – yang mana yang paling enak?

Indonesia is a land of culinary surprises many of which are completely missed even by hardened backpackers trekking over some of the 17,000 islands. One of these fantastic culinary surprises is a dessert called es pisang ijo.

What is es pisang ijo?

Es pisang ijo literally translates as green banana ice and really, it’s pretty much spot on. This dessert dish is simply a cup filled with ice, pink sugar syrup, nuts, chocolate sprinkles, jelly pieces, bubur (sweet rice porridge stuff) and banana wrapped in a green pancake made from rice flour.

All this stuff is essentially dumped in together to form a sweet soup which is really refreshing when faced with the Indonesian heat of the day.

Where to get es pisang ijo

Es pisang ijo is generally available from small street carts, but it is not commonly found around the place. You will have to look very hard indeed to find this dessert, but when you do find it, grab a cup! There is also a chain of these carts called “Justmine” and searching on foursquare might unearth one near you!

    • @Aggy – it’s often really difficult to try new desserts in Indonesia for bule. Lucky We are a mixed bule/Indonesian couple do we can try the best of both worlds.
